Diigo is a social bookmarking tool used often by educators - allows you to "markup" or annotate right on top of websites you find and bookmark
1
so that your notes go with your bookmark. Bookmarks are also saved online, meaning anywhere there is an Internet connection, there are your bookmarks. Bookmarks can be shared with others or kept private. So instead of adding bookmarks to your computer, add them to Diigo and have access to them anywhere in the world.

Upgrade your Account to Free Educator Account

to take advantage of additional features designed especially for teachers

Go to https://www.diigo.com/education and request an upgrade to an Educator account. An educator account allows teachers to create student accounts within a teacher created group. This is beneficial to teachers with students under the age of 13 as it requires no personal information. School email addresses must be used with an Educator account.

2. Before finalizing bookmarks, notice the Annotation feature. Use the mouse to highlight key text on a webpage. Add Sticky Notes to take notes directly on a page. If groups have been set up, highlights and sticky notes can all be shared with members of the group. Awesome for research collaboration!

Notice the Pencil, Comment Icon and Search Icon appear after highlighting information.

3. When you are ready to save a bookmark, with or without Annotations, click Save. A pop-up window from Diigo will appear. You will see the URL is automatically linked and the Title filled in. Feel free to edit the Title field, but don't change the URL as this will change the URL and the bookmark won't work. The Description box will show text highlighted on the site. More can be added to this box. Also in this pop-up is a field called Tags. A tag is a keyword that describes the site you are bookmarking. Enter as many tags as desired separated by spaces (or have a multi-word tag by including it in quotation marks.). Tags can be created or selected from the recommended tags that are provided.

Bookmarks can be kept private, read later or cached. Additional bookmarks can be Shared to a Group.

Click Save to save your new bookmark to your Diiigo account.

2. At the top of the screen will be several links to navigate around your account.
  • My Library: Clicking on this link at any time will take you back to your saved links. On the My Library page, you will see a search box that will allow you to search through your library using the tags you've created to organize your bookmarks.
  • My Outliners: Use this link to create an Outline and organize information you have collected.
  • My Groups: This link provides a way to create groups and join groups. It also shows any group you have joined. This is a great way to keep track of what your students are bookmarking.
  • Tools: If you missed setting up the Diigo Browser tool when creating your account, here is where you can get those tools.
  • Blog: Diigo has a blog that is a great resource for learning more about Diigo.

Looking at Your Bookmarks

Look at the first bookmark that you saved. You will see the name of the link you bookmarked. If you click on this link, you will go straight to the site. Also, you will see any description you used when you were saving your bookmark. Then, you see all of the tags that you have associated with this bookmark.

To the left of your bookmarks, you can sort through all of the tags that you have used within your account.

Private vs. Public Bookmarks

In general, anyone can access your bookmarks by visiting http://www.diigo.com/user/yourusername. Knowing that your bookmarks are available for the world to see, there may be times where you will want to save a bookmark for your private use only. While Diigo makes a strong push toward the sharing of bookmarks, there is a way to make a particular bookmark private. Making a bookmark private is helpful if you want to save a site but not allow others to see it.

When you’re saving a bookmark, you will notice that there is a checkbox that says private. Select that box, and that bookmark will only be seen by you when you log in.

Sharing Tags with Students

1. Ever want students to do research and want to limit the sites they use? Using Tags when you bookmark sites, you can do this. Locate and tag all of the sites you want students to use.

2. Select the tag on the left hand side.

Diigo will filter all of the bookmarks that have the associated tag.
DiigoSelectTag.PNG
3. Use the URL for that page to share with students.
